Fontana delle Anfore (1926)

Fontana delle Anfore, Piazza dell'Emporio, Rome
This fountain, fed by Acqua Marcia, dates to October 28, 1926. It commemorates the fourth anniversary of Mussolini's March on Rome, the march of Fascist party that lead Mussolini to power and is by Pietro Lombardi, who was commissioned by S.P.Q.R.. Lombardi won a city contest, which stipulated that statues, groups of figures, bas-reliefs, bronze or marble could not be used. The fountain is a reminder of the amphorae used to transport food, wine, and other goods to the port of Ripa Grande. Goods came by ship to the port of Ripa Grande and were stored there in amphorae in large warehouse. They are the symbol of the rione Testaccio. Now, the broken amphorae cover an area of 16 acres, 120 feet high. The fountain was originally placed in Piazza Testaccio before being transferred here. Each of its four sections is reached by a set of five concentric steps. Everything is rounded, with no sharp edges or straight lines.

2. Start outlining the artifact. Have in mind certain criteria the become defining points/areas of importance
- you do not want to end up with a line drawing of the artifact, but rather and abstraction of it from which you can infer spatial/atmospheric notions. Based on those points/areas, you can also begin to decay the item--that is erode away the original notion to get diagram from it, always using the objects own logic and points of influence to apply an effect in certain areas.
3. Once you have the linework setup, you can begin combining/blend shaping between lines.
- Either select two lines at a time, or a series of lines
- Go to OBJECT-blend-make
- OBJECT -blend - blend options ---here you put specified distance and adjust the space between lines...hit preview to view how it will look before you commit.
-these objects now are parametrically based, you can use the DIRECT SELECTION TOOL (A) to move specific points and the set of lines follow.
