Fontana delle Anfore, Piazza dell'Emporio, Rome
This fountain, fed by Acqua Marcia, dates to October 28, 1926. It commemorates the fourth anniversary of Mussolini's March on Rome, the march of Fascist party that lead Mussolini to power and is by Pietro Lombardi, who was commissioned by S.P.Q.R.. Lombardi won a city contest, which stipulated that statues, groups of figures, bas-reliefs, bronze or marble could not be used. The fountain is a reminder of the amphorae used to transport food, wine, and other goods to the port of Ripa Grande. Goods came by ship to the port of Ripa Grande and were stored there in amphorae in large warehouse. They are the symbol of the rione Testaccio. Now, the broken amphorae cover an area of 16 acres, 120 feet high. The fountain was originally placed in Piazza Testaccio before being transferred here. Each of its four sections is reached by a set of five concentric steps. Everything is rounded, with no sharp edges or straight lines.
