o Fontana delle Api

o Decorated with the heraldic bees of the Berberini family

o Pope Urban’s family was the Berberini family

o There are three bees, symbolizing the Berberini family crest

o Upper shell originally designed for Pope Urban VIII at a different location,

but later moved for traffic requirements

o Built in 1644

o Original inscription, celebrating Pope Urban’s 22nd year of reign, was changed because he had only reigned for 21 years

o “The Supreme PontiffUrban the Eighth, after building a fountain for the public decoration of the Eternal City, built this separate fountain for the use of the citizens in the year 1644, the twentieth of his papacy”

o Inscription says that the fountain is or use by the public and their animals

o Originally popular with horses

o Located in the Piazza Barberini alongside the Fountain of Triton

o Built because the fountain of Triton did not suit the needs of the public.

o The water is drained from the fountain of Triton
